What is Dental Sleep Medicine?

Snoring is a common problem across the world. The irony is that, the snorer’s are blissfully unaware of the problems they create for their bed partners. Snoring can be a major factor in sleep disturbance and the resulting stress, leading to lack of energy, poor concentration, mood swings, and irritability. In the long term it could also cause a condition called as OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnoea). Fortunately there are now options available to treat snoring & sleep apnoea.

Dental sleep medicine is a field of dental practice that deals with the use of oral appliances to treat sleeping disorders, including sleep apnea and snoring.

Dr. Santosh Patil, Principal Dentist, at Straight Road Dental Practice, works alongside Sleep Physicians and is certified in screening Sleep Apnoea & Snoring, for providing MAS mandibular advancement splint as a therapeutic tool for helping snorers. Call # 01206 769695 to schedule an appointment and get a goodnight sleep.

What is Snoring & Sleep Aponea?

Snoring is the vibratory noisy breathing while you sleep and happens when the flow of air through your mouth and nose is partially blocked.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) happens when a partially blocked airway (snoring) changes to a completely blocked airway. People with untreated sleep apnoea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep resulting in serious sleep disorder.

Am I at Risk for Sleep Apnoea?

You could be at risk for Sleep Apnoea if any of the below listed points applies to you.
  • Bed partner reports episodes of breathing cessation
  • You experience waking with choking/obstructed episodes
  • Daytime sleepiness (not tiredness) e.g. nodding off during less stimulating activities: reading, watching TV, meetings, etc.
  • Neck circumference over 17″ in men and over 16'' in women
  • Being overweight ( BMI > 30)
  • Small pharynx (throat) on visual inspection

Is treatment really necessary?

There is no doubt that treatment is essential for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and extremely appropriate for snorers.

OSA has been linked to an increased risk of stroke, High BP, cardiovascular diseases, depression, headaches etc.

In addition, untreated sleep apnoea may be responsible for poor performance in everyday activities, such as at work and school, motor vehicle crashes.

The social consequences can be extremely distressing: banishment from the bedroom, marital disharmony, fear of travelling, etc.

How does the treatment work?

At our practice, we offer the world’s leading oral applicance from Somnowell. These are also referred as Mandibular Repositioning Device (MRD). These are worn in the mouth at night and can greatly help reduce snoring. They work by holding the lower jaw and tongue forward during sleep. The narrowing of the airway behind the tongue is prevented thus reducing the likelihood of snoring and even apnoeic episodes.

Somnowell device are custom made from ultra-resilient medical super alloy, which are best for oral hygiene and suitable for long term wear in the mouth. This thin, small, and discreet Somnowell device is amazingly comfortable and also allows horizontal and vertical jaw movement.

A painless extraction. I had suddenly lost a large filling in a tooth that had been troublesome for sometime. I phoned at 9:30 and spoke to a very efficient receptionist who offered me a 12:30 appointment as a new NHS patient. On arrival at the practice I was met by a very friendly dental nurse and ushered through to the treatment room where the dentist began the examination, taking great care to reassuringly explain how he intended to proceed. All options were explained to me and it was obvious the tooth needed to come out. From the application of anaesthetic to the final extraction, I can honestly say the most I felt was a slight discomfort. Afterwards the aftercare was carefully explained in detail and I was provided with written instructions. I am genuinely impressed by the friendly and professional service provided at short notice and have no hesitation in recommending the practice.
