Tooth Extraction - Get Your Tooth Removed Safely

Our goal is to help you keep your teeth for as long as possible – ideally a lifetime – but in some cases of severe tooth decay, teeth may need to be extracted to stop the spread of infection and relieve the patient of intense pain.

You must look after the area to speed healing and reduce the risk of infection. You will be given anesthetic and offered sedation if you are anxious.

If you need to have a tooth removed, call # 01206 769695 to schedule an appointment with our expert clinicians, who will discuss the procedure in detail and also look at the different ways to replace your tooth.

Why would I need to remove my tooth?

Some common reasons for tooth extraction are
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Gum disease (periodontal disease)
  • A broken tooth that can’t be restored
  • An abscess (a collection of pus) on your gums or around your teeth
  • Severe Crowded teeth – when your teeth don’t have enough space in your jaw
  • Impacted wisdom teeth

The Treatment Procedure

Our dentist will ask about your dental and medical history. They will also explain the procedure in detail.

Most people usually have their tooth removed under a local anaesthesia. If you’re very anxious, you might opt for sedation, which relieves anxiety and helps you to relax.

Our dentist will use some tools to loosen your tooth. When this has been done, forceps are then used to wiggle the tooth around until it comes out.

If the tooth is not fully through, the gum may have to be cut to get to the tooth more easily. You might need some stitches to put the gum back. These usually dissolve and fall out by themselves.

Entire procedure last for 20-30 minutes.

What to expect after tooth Extraction?

  • Some slight bleeding is normal for a day or so - this can be controlled with pressure over the area
  • Our dentist will advise you about using painkillers to help ease any pain.
  • Some swelling and bruising is normal but should disappear within a week or two.
  • You might also have difficulty opening your mouth wide; again this generally returns to normal within a week or two

After Care Tips

  • Avoid mouthwash, mouth rinses, hot food and drinks and strenuous activity for the first 24 hours
  • After 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water 3-4 times per day, always after meals
  • Eat a well-balanced, soft diet for a few days until you’re able to chew carefully with your remaining teeth
  • Avoid smoking & alcohol as it affects the body’s ability to heal

A painless extraction. I had suddenly lost a large filling in a tooth that had been troublesome for sometime. I phoned at 9:30 and spoke to a very efficient receptionist who offered me a 12:30 appointment as a new NHS patient. On arrival at the practice I was met by a very friendly dental nurse and ushered through to the treatment room where the dentist began the examination, taking great care to reassuringly explain how he intended to proceed. All options were explained to me and it was obvious the tooth needed to come out. From the application of anaesthetic to the final extraction, I can honestly say the most I felt was a slight discomfort. Afterwards the aftercare was carefully explained in detail and I was provided with written instructions. I am genuinely impressed by the friendly and professional service provided at short notice and have no hesitation in recommending the practice.
