What is Gum Contouring?

Gum contouring is a cosmetic procedure that can change the shape of your gums. A dentist can use this procedure to cut away excessive gum tissue that is giving you a “gummy” smile or to restore gum tissue that has receded and is now exposing too much of your teeth.

The Treatment Procedure

During your initial consultation, you can discuss your concerns and goals with your clinician.

On the day of your procedure, we will first apply the local anesthetic to the treatment area. Our Clinicians will then slowly remove excess tissue using laser or scalpel, and reshape the gum line. Their goal is to remove the least amount of tissue possible to achieve your desired results.

If you have an issue with recedding gums instead of gummy smile, our clinicians will skillfully add the gum tissue to achieve your desired result.

Entire treatment can be completed in a single visit and treatment duration is around 1 – 2 hour.

Caring for Your Gums After Treatment

During the first few days following your gum contouring procedure, your gums will likely feel sore and swollen. We recommend resting the day of your procedure to allow your body to focus on healing. Most patients are able to manage any discomfort using over-the-counter pain medication.

For the first week, you should avoid eating hard or spicy food which can irritate your gums during healing. Cool, soft foods are more gentle on your gums. It is important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine after a gum contouring procedure. However, until your gum tissue has healed, you should be gentle while brushing or flossing the treated areas. Using a saline rinse is a good way to remove food debris from your gums and keep them healthy while you heal.

A painless extraction. I had suddenly lost a large filling in a tooth that had been troublesome for sometime. I phoned at 9:30 and spoke to a very efficient receptionist who offered me a 12:30 appointment as a new NHS patient. On arrival at the practice I was met by a very friendly dental nurse and ushered through to the treatment room where the dentist began the examination, taking great care to reassuringly explain how he intended to proceed. All options were explained to me and it was obvious the tooth needed to come out. From the application of anaesthetic to the final extraction, I can honestly say the most I felt was a slight discomfort. Afterwards the aftercare was carefully explained in detail and I was provided with written instructions. I am genuinely impressed by the friendly and professional service provided at short notice and have no hesitation in recommending the practice.
