What is a Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal is a dental procedure that cleans out the pulp and root. When the dental pulp is damaged, bacteria can start to multiply inside the tooth. This can lead to an infection or abscess, which is a pocket of pus that forms at the end of the tooth’s root. The main objective of root canal treatment is to preserve the infected existing natural tooth by disinfection.

Saving your own tooth if possible is important. It works better than an artificial tooth for biting and chewing. Losing a tooth can lead to other problems in the mouth. Replacing a lost tooth with an artificial one often needs more complex dental procedures. Root canal treatment is often the best way of saving your tooth.

You can count on the experienced dentists at Straight road Dental Practice, who provide thorough root canal treatments to restore your teeth and protect your smile. Call # 01206 769695 now to schedule an appointment with our experts.

When Do I Need Root Canal Treatment?

  • severe toothache
  • a persistent pimple on the gums or a hole in the tooth
  • swelling of the face or neck

The Treatment Procedure

The treatment usually involves one to three appointments depending upon the severity of the damage. At the first appointment, under local anaesthesia the infected pulp and abscesses are removed. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for a temporary filling. After filling, the tooth is left to settle. Finally, the tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the pulp chamber and canal(s) are filled with gutta percha or another material to prevent recontamination. Once filled, the area is permanently sealed. A metal or porcelain crown is normally placed over the tooth to strengthen its structure and improve appearance.

What happens if I don't have a root canal treatment?

The objective of root canal treatment is to save your teeth; if the condition is left untreated, the tooth will eventually need to be removed.

If you act fast, not only do you get to keep your teeth but you will save yourself pain along the way. If the pulp inside the root becomes inflamed, an abscess may form and this can become extremely painful.

Preventing Tooth Cavities

  • Brush your teeth at least twice per day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss at least once daily
  • Eat fewer sugary and acidic foods, like sweets, candy, juice, soda, and refined carbohydrates
  • Visit your dentist at least twice per year for regular teeth cleanings

A painless extraction. I had suddenly lost a large filling in a tooth that had been troublesome for sometime. I phoned at 9:30 and spoke to a very efficient receptionist who offered me a 12:30 appointment as a new NHS patient. On arrival at the practice I was met by a very friendly dental nurse and ushered through to the treatment room where the dentist began the examination, taking great care to reassuringly explain how he intended to proceed. All options were explained to me and it was obvious the tooth needed to come out. From the application of anaesthetic to the final extraction, I can honestly say the most I felt was a slight discomfort. Afterwards the aftercare was carefully explained in detail and I was provided with written instructions. I am genuinely impressed by the friendly and professional service provided at short notice and have no hesitation in recommending the practice.
