Why Do I Need Dental Fillings?

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental ailments in the world. Tooth decay and dental cavities manifest in the form of tooth pain, tooth sensitivity, discoloration of tooth, and visible holes in the structure of the tooth. Dental cavities can occur in infants, children, adults, and older adults.

The best option for minor tooth decay and cavities is typically with the use of a dental filling. Dental fillings help restore the functionality and shape of a tooth. They are the most common form of dental treatment and most people will have had one or more at some time in their life. They’re also available in a metal or tooth coloured form.

At Straight Road Dental Practice, we offer the most advanced restorative dental materials used to repair tooth decay and dental cavities. Call Now # 01206 769695 to schedule an appointment with our dentist.

What Are White Fillings?

Modern white fillings, aka composite resin fillings, are a combination of a resin and nano-particles of glass.

Affording better strength, straightforward treatments and improved aesthetics, white fillings are gradually becoming the preferred option for treating cavities. White fillings not only look great but they function correctly, are healthy and will last for many years.

How Do Dental Filings Work?

Bacteria eat into the structure of the tooth once the enamel is corroded by acids present in the oral cavity. That is why dentists remove the infected dentin, pulp and soft tissues. Dental fillings are used to cover up the space created by the decay of tooth.

When the infected part is removed, it is then filled up with dental fillings. Dental fillings prevent bacteria from entering into the tooth and also provide some functionality in terms of bite.

The Treatment Procedure

After removing plaque and tartar, local anesthetic is administered, if required, around the tooth to be filled. Next, a drill, air abrasion instrument, or laser will be used to remove the decayed area or any existing filling. Following preparation, the dentist places the composite in layers; to aid the bonding, the tooth surface is etched and coated with a gel and bonding solution. A curing light is then used to harden the filling before it is trimmed and polished to look like a natural part of your tooth.

The treatment process could take 20 – 30 minutes per cavity.

Preventing Tooth Cavities

  • Brush your teeth at least twice per day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss at least once daily
  • Eat fewer sugary and acidic foods, like sweets, candy, juice, soda, and refined carbohydrates
  • Limit snacking between meals
  • Visit your dentist at least twice per year for regular teeth cleanings

A painless extraction. I had suddenly lost a large filling in a tooth that had been troublesome for sometime. I phoned at 9:30 and spoke to a very efficient receptionist who offered me a 12:30 appointment as a new NHS patient. On arrival at the practice I was met by a very friendly dental nurse and ushered through to the treatment room where the dentist began the examination, taking great care to reassuringly explain how he intended to proceed. All options were explained to me and it was obvious the tooth needed to come out. From the application of anaesthetic to the final extraction, I can honestly say the most I felt was a slight discomfort. Afterwards the aftercare was carefully explained in detail and I was provided with written instructions. I am genuinely impressed by the friendly and professional service provided at short notice and have no hesitation in recommending the practice.
